Last Day...

... and a very short post.

I am glad that I made it a full month and committed to blogging everyday. Sadly I don't have much time to write... I need to get to bed. I went out with a friend and had a great chat.

One More Day...

Well,  I only have one more day left of the November blogging thing. It has been nice writing consistently (even though it has been mainly about nothing interesting) for the past month. I do enjoy blogging but think that doing so on a daily basis can get quite monotonous.

Oh and an update about my foot. It's not broken. I have swelling due to the injury and tissue damage which will the some time to heal. The issue with the ball of my foot is from possible nerve damage that was caused when I hit my ankle. But I did get asked, "Do you know you have high arches?" Yes, thank you I am well aware of that. It makes finding shoes very interesting.

Well, to find out about my foot today, I had to take off of work. And back to work in the morning...

5am comes way too bloody early.

Fracture???

Well I did a number on my ankle over the holiday. I ended up bashing my ankle into one of the pointy fronts of the runner on a rocking chair. Needless to say that my ankle is many lovely shades of unnatural colors though mainly still blue. The bad part is that it is still swollen and the ball of my foot is painful to walk on. I usually end up walking with my foot rolled off the ball. It tweaks my ankle but gets off the ball. After days of it seeming to not get better and still be painful, I am heading to the doctor in the morning. One of the lovely walk-in clinics. joy. I will need to bring something to listen to and knit while I am there. Sadly, I am hoping something is broken so I can get a cast. I have never had one- only a splint, bandage and a sling for my arm once. Although it is likely, if I get anything it will probably be one of the moon boots. lovely. Well, I am still heading to bed so I can inform my people at work bright and early that I will not be coming in.

-still crossing my fingers for a cast-

Back Again...

Tomorrow I head back to work. Oh, I'm overjoyed. (Could you sense the sarcasm?) I have been given a stay through the end of the student's session of December 11th. That means that I will go back to work on Monday and Tuesday and that Tuesday the 13th is when I will be told if they are keeping me or not. Truthfully, I really just wish they would say yea or nay as soon as possible and stop dicking about. It is just too bad that I can't tell my boss that. I have a feeling that they will try to do something to make me quit so they don't have to pay any unemployment. Yes that is how shady this place may be. Well, time will tell. In the mean time I have two weeks left of work to go.

I am trying not to think about it. Well, time to head to bed.

Late Late Post

Well... thanksgiving was nice. The food was good. I did get the fingerless gloves completed and gave them to my aunt. She really did enjoy them.

I really wish I was shopping at some store for some amazing product deals. Sadly, I just don't see the point of waiting outside and camping outside for days so be in the front of a line. Perhaps my mind would change if I could locate someone crazy enough  to do that with me. I was super thrilled to hear about a 42" LCD tv at Best Buy for $199. Sadly you would probably have to be one of the first 10 people in line to grab something like that. I remember wanting to get something a few years ago and thought I would head over in the early am. Well, the line was completely around the building. Needless to say, I did not go shopping there.

Well, maybe I can find something when I am out after my doctor visit at 9am.

Off to bed.

Nearly Turkey Day

Well, everything is ready to go. I have to finish my second fingerless glove- it is almost halfway through on the last repeat. From there only 8 rows of ribbing, two thumbs, sewing ends and they will be complete. Super thrilled. Then I need to kick out my traveling scarves so they can get ready to be miles on monday.

From there onto finishing off my swap spoilee's kit.

Is it wrong to want to spend the holiday away from everyone and just stay in bed? That is just the mood that I am in.

Well off to bed.

22 November 2011

Countdown to Turkey Day

- Wednesday- work until 5 pm
--- attempt to may way home (hopefully NOT in gridlock)
- Work on finishing the fingerless gloves for my aunt on Thursday.
--- I only have one thumb on the right and 2-14 row repeats as well as the thumb for the left. Since I completed one repeat during tonight's episode of Covert Affairs, give me 3 hours and I will have both of the gloves completed.  YAY
- Work on projects for my swap and get box finished for send off.

Sorry for the short post- need sleep.

Knitting Progress

Well, my mom's keyhole scarf is complete. I finished sewing in the ends during my lunch break today. She said that she will be wearing it tomorrow. Sorry for the lack of pictures. I will post one when my digital camera is charged and ready to go.

My aunt's mittens are coming along nicely. I am finishing the ribbing before casting off, then I only have the thumb to complete and the right fingerless mittens will be complete. Then onto the last one. Hoping to have it complete and ready for Thursday. At least the pattern is a pretty quick knit so there is that plus.

Anyways... one day down at work, 2 more left this week. Not looking forward to my weekly meeting with my manager. Same bs, different week. It also sounds like there may be some job losses at my company. There already has been at the parent company that is over the company I work for. I guess only time will tell.

Off to watch House and finish some ribbing.

Quick Post Before Bed

Today, Sunday, I had to work. Joy. I did meet my minimum metrics so on Tuesday we shall see how close I am to the chopping block. I am just so tired of seeing the ax above my head and not knowing when it will come swinging down. If I knew a date that basically that next day, I will no longer have a job- it would be a relief. I would have a definite end in sight and be able to start working to put this job far behind me.

I am just so tired of all the compliments on how well I do my work, know policies and procedures, etc., "but you just aren't doing as much as you need to be". Just let me know that this date you are gone- and we will leave it at that.

Oh well, off to hell (work) I go tomorrow morning. Wednesday- 5pm cannot come quick enough.

The Issue With Knitting...

Everyone thinks you can just complete projects within a day and do not want to pay for the labor/ materials cost.

For example, I have requests for scarves, hats, gloves, mittens, sweaters, etc. While I don't mind making them for close relatives because I know they will appreciate them and they have helped me out with so much, knitting is a small thing in comparison. Other people that I am not related to or very close to requesting multiple hours of knitting- I am not fond of.

I have told many people that I would be more than happy to show them how to knit and help them if they get stuck on a project, but I do not have the time to be their personal knitter. The phrase I hate the most is, "I wish I had the time to do that."

Listen, I work 4 days a week of 10 hour (well 11 with my unpaid lunch) days. Add in there 3-4 hours on the road round trip (possibly more when it starts snowing). All I have to knit on is about a half hour of my lunch, and Friday, Saturday, and Sunday when I am (usually) not working. Odds are that if you work 8 hours a day and live within 30 miles of your home, you have way more possible knitting time than I do.

Just because I like to knit, does not mean  that I do not work, am a shut-in, or some other crazy misconception. Quite frankly, I knit to relax. My favorite saying is, "I knit so I don't kill people." It's funny but true.

Well, enough of my rant.

In My World of Knitting...

I am working on a Noro Keyhole Scarf for my mom out of Taiyo. I got the yarn at The Sow's Ear near Madison, Wisconsin a few years ago. She requested a scarf- so there you go.

I am going to be working on some fingerless gloves for my aunt. She requested them as well. She has been through a lot this year, so I am not saying no to her request. I just need to get them done. I am thinking either Cascade 220, some Noro that I have, or perhaps some Knit Picks worsted yarn that I have. I need to go stash diving for that. I just picked out the pattern on Ravelry. It is a very nice cabled pattern called Vancouver Fog.

I am part of a traveling scarf group- not sure if I mentioned this previously. I received two scarves and need to get them sent off to the next person as soon as possible. I am hoping to have them going out this Monday or the following Monday after the holiday. It will likely be the following monday.

Off to catch up on my Friday shows.

Oh Sheldon

I cannot express how much I love The Big Bang Theory. Sheldon is such a great character and tonight's episode was one of the best in awhile. Sheldon finally admitted that Amy is his girlfriend after a small bout of jealousy due to another potential suitor, Stewart. Stewart is awesome. I love the character and the guy that plays him. Stewart is a lonely comic book store owner, and that is just fabulous- especially to a geek like me.

Penny was a hoot in this episode as well. Sadly the writers are making her a bit of a lush. Not sure if the writers are planning some sort of intervention or what. While it is amusing, I don't think all of the alcohol and portraying her as a drunk is really needed to keep her character interesting.

Moving on... this is definitely an episode that will be saved to my DVR to watch repeatedly. I am hoping that Penny and Leonard get back together, but I don't think  that will happen.

And in other news... I will be going out on a lunch date tomorrow. He picked the time (friend zone much?). Anyways, shall see if anything comes out of it.

-Off to bed to rematch tonight's Big Bang.

I dare you...

to listen to the Dropkick Murphys song- "I'm Shipping Up to Boston" or " Johnny I Hardly Knew Ya" and not have your foot tap to the beat, sing along, or get up and dance.

It will be difficult to completely refrain from doing any of those while listening to those songs- and really listen to the actual song with the melodies.

I have been on my German electronica kick for quite sometime, but I still do come back to my Irish music station. The songs, jigs, and lyrics are so wonderful to listen to.

I personally love music. Music can help to change my mood and be a great motivator for me. I personally listen to music- it is a must for me- when cooking or baking. I also always have some music going while I write my blog each evening.

Sorry for the off kilter post, my brain is tired and fried. Well off to bed. Thursday is my last day of my typical work week, though sadly I have to return on Sunday for a shift. At least then I only have Monday- Wednesday with the holiday. That will be a nice four day weekend.

To Hell and Back

That was my journey after work. I had to go to Babies 'R' Us (aka Hell). My team lead at work is pregnant and due with her first child, a girl, around Xmas- so I had to go shopping for her shower. I call that store Hell because as someone that personally does not see myself spawning at all in the near or distant future, going to that store with teacup humans running around or screaming makes my blood curdle.

Also, why does it cost near $40-50 for an outfit for a child? I didn't realize that a 0-18 month child cost that much to clothe. If it wasn't frowned upon I would say use a flour sack for the child. One could go in to debt just paying for a kid's clothing let alone all of the other bloody supplies that are needed throughout their growing.

I spent around $40 and what did I get? --rubbery coated baby spoons, rubbery coated toddler spoons, microwaveable plates with covers, microwaveable bowls with covers, teething rings, and two noisy- pull things to keep the teacup human occupied. Seriously- $40 for that!?! Then of course it was near another $10 with tissue paper, card, bag, and tax of course.

Call me selfish, but I could have gotten at least 3-4 skeins of yummy Malabrigo yarn with that money. Oh well, I guess I just don't get it.

Well... time to go watch The Ringer and Covert Affairs.

Traveling Scarves and Work

Quite a bit ago (like last year) I joined a traveling scarf knitting thing(?) through Ravelry. Today I just received two scarves to knit on. I am anxiously waiting on my scarf to get shipped back to this side of the pond- it has been residing in the UK for the past 6 months. Once it is back in the states I think it only has two or three more stops and then it will be back to me. I just really cannot wait to see it.

In other news, typical frustration with work. I enjoy my job in the aspect that I understand the processes and proceedures and have no problem asking and answering questions... but I don't think that it is right to only judge someone by how much you are actually talking on the phone. That is what my job is doing. I do plenty of student outreach and attempts, but you don't always get someone answering the phone. It is really just aggrivating because it is the fact that I am not someone to keep a student on their phone and ask asinine questions like, "how are your kids or how is your (type of animal)" because quite frankly I don't care. I don't see what talking about someone's animal or child or divorce is helping further the student academically. You can take me that speaks with and attempts contact to 40-60 students in a day while talking on the phone for 3 hours versus another advisor that speaks with 25 students during the day for a total of 4 hours (about everything in their life). I don't see how being an unliscensed counselor is helping students with their classes over answering pertanent questions that the student has about their class, policy, and proceedures. I guess that is why I am on the verge of losing my job at this company. I just quite frankly do not agree with where they place the importance of only judging us on our job by our talk time.

Okay off of my soap box.

Time to watch some House.

Back to Work Tomorrow

I am at least happy that I get to work my shorter days this week. It will be a nice break and I will actually get to join my knit group on Wednesday.

In a funner, and happier note- I got to meet up with one of my cousins that I have not seen in 10 years. We were never raised around each other, but I still think that my generation for the  most part has lost touch with their cousins and other family that are their age and spread out. Anyways it was good to be able to catch up with him and see how things have been going since the last time I saw him all those years ago.

And now for something completely different...

I got the sweater for my cousin finished today. Right now it is blocking on the dining room table. I am happy to get that taken care of. I am also looking forward to delivering it and then seeing the two garments when they get their family photo taken. I am also making some matching calorimetry-esque headbands as well.

Okay, enough sining for the evening on my end- I have been singing Mrs. Lovett's parts to various Sweeney Todd songs while typing this.

Of to bed and watch Once Upon a Time.

Baking delight

I finally got my apple pies made this evening. Golden delicious apples make some of the best apple pies. I love making apple pies but I absolutely hate peeling the apples. I wish I had an automat apple peeler (or someone that would do it for me). That would make things so much easier and quicker.

Anyways, they are quite delicious. I know that I will be making many more. This time when I made them, they have pie crust tops instead of a crumb crust. I personally like the looks and taste of a crumb crust much more.

My pumpkin pies are going to get made tomorrow.

On a side note this evening I did get the chance to reconnect with a cousin that I have not seen in over 10 years. He is back living in the same area that I am and I do think that it is sad how my generation does not keep in touch like my parents do with their cousins.

Well, it's that time again to relax and get ready for bed.

PS- Primeval's new season started this evening (in the US)! Yay for a DVR.

A Painful Reminder

I had several things that I had hoped to accomplish today but I ended up being in a lot of pain.  I have fibromyalgia. I was diagnosed as having it in my teens, which is around the same time that my mother started having the same issues but she was not diagnosed until later in life.

If you want to know what it is like, the closest I can describe is a similar aching pain that you would have with arthritis. The pain is sometimes so bad that the portion of you body that is affected is horribly painful to the touch and the pain is all in the muscle.

I am used to having the pain in my right arm, my neck, and legs but today my left arm was affected.  Before you get worried about a heart attack, my heart and chest had absolutely no pain, unusual heartbeat, or sweating that typically accompanies a heart attack. This pain was in my upper arm (and still is) in the muscle tissue and it did spread to my forearm as well but my forearm is not as painful.

I personally have a high pain threshold but the pain I had today and this evening left me with not wanting to do much. I normally get pain in my right arm and not a left so that was a huge surprise and painful shock.

Sadly a bout with fibromyalgia can be aggravated by changing weather, especially if it is going to rain or snow. Well, our weather suddenly just got colder and we are due for a lot of rain this weekend- which may end up being snow if the temperature drops too much.

I am hoping that I will feel better tomorrow since I have so much that I would like to accomplish still this weekend.

Well off to relax and watch Supernatural, Fringe, and Grimm that are waiting for me on my DVR.

Walk Tall...

Okay... I am going to leave you with a light hearted and fun post this evening. I live in the US but am in love with the BBC series from a few years ago- Blackpool. If you have not heard of it, don't be surprised. It is not available for sale in the US on DVD and you cannot locate the soundtrack either.

Why is it awesome? Well... for me I have three words. David Tennant Singing! I mean what more do you really need.

First I adore David since he is by far my favorite doctor (Doctor Who). I began with 9, but 10 really pulled at the heart strings so much. 11 is good, but he is nowhere near David.

Second, the series has drama, comedy... and singing! Songs like "The Boy With the Thorn in His Side", "Walk Tall", "White Wedding", "These Boots Are Made for Walking" and the list goes on.

I highly recommend you search on YouTube for Blackpool and watch some of the music taken from bits of the series or even watch some episodes while on there.

After watching some of the songs, I usually get Walk Tall stuck in my head. Have fun and experience something new :)

One More Day...

Yes, I am counting down until my work week is over. I normally work only 4 days a week but with 10 hour shifts.  Tomorrow is the last of my work week. I am t-h-r-i-l-l-e-d!

I am so looking forward to my three days of of work, though they seem to go much faster than my work week.

This weekend I plan to:
Make pumpkin pies
Make apple pies
Finish knitting my cousin's sweater
Go yarn shopping to get cracking on items for a kitting swap
Work on my website design for my "resume" website
Catch up on my DVR with shows from the week
Sleep IN!!!
Finish setting up/ organizing/ taking things out of boxes for my living room
Relaxing! - I need some of that to de-stress.

I hope everyone has a great weekend and is able to work on some projects and definitely get some relaxation time in.

Creating a Resume Website

This weekend I am going to work on creating a website to showcase some of my work to help boost my resume. Now comes the time when I need to work towards narrowing down what to actually place on my website.

I have fashion design, pattern creation, spec packages, photography, and sketches that I can utilize for my Fashion Design degree. This will definitely be mainly visual.

I also have a degree in merchandising. With this degree I have experience with advertising, marketing, PR, journalism writing, runway production, and helping to source and cost a clothing line from design through production to store delivery. The merchandising degree is where it will be a bit more difficult to produce some work. Even more difficult is that for my grad degree.

I have an MBA in Operations Management. Basically this degree was about how to keep a company running effectively and efficiently through continuous improvement, lean manufacturing, cost and sourcing analysis. I also learned how to do production time lines for parts delivery, use, to final product(ion) completion. This section will definitely be the most writing and least flashy of the three.

I think I am also going to add a section for interests such as my knitwear design, knitting, sketching, and photography.

In excess of all the flashy stuff I will be including a tab with my actual resume and a tab that lists my skills- something that you would commonly find on a CV.

In the end I certainly hope this helps to set me apart of the mass amount of applicants so that prospective employers can see my previous work examples and capability.

I just need to get out of my stressful job as soon as possible.

Well as usual- now off to bed.

Trying to Find the Meaning of Life

I have been thinking a lot recently about my life- where it is heading, what changes I need to make, ways to improve myself and my life.

My life would be a lot more carefree if I did not have a huge amount of student loans over my head. To deal with them and to enjoy work more I really need to locate a new job. I have 2 undergrad degrees and one grad degree, but right now the economy is crap and any job is few and far between. Still I hope that the website I will be creating and the resumes that I will be sending will help me get to a better life than the one I have right now.

Sorry to be so short and bleak- I just have a lot on my mind and had a rough day at work dealing with people with a serious case of self entitlement. Anyways... off to bed to watch some shows before 5am comes again.

06 November 2011

New Computer

Well... I did it. I went out and purchased a new computer. I was assisted greatly at the local Best Buy. The guys that assisted me today were absolutely great! They were able to answer all of my questions that I had about the computers and get me set up for my needs.

I came home with a 21.5" iMac 500 Gb (included- magic mouse and keyboard), 2T Time Capsule, magic track pad, and a 2 year (re-newable) warranty that will cover my computer if the screen decides to blow.  The whole package listed above came to about $200 more than the package that I had originally decided on- except it didn't include the external HD or track pad and was with my employee discount. Best Buy certainly had a nice deal on the price of the computers right now.

Needless to say, I am thrilled! The computer is now all set up and I am typing on it right now to write this blog. Next weekend I will be loading the Adobe CS5 Suite so that I can get some graphic design kicked out and start on a nice website to promote my work and myself to potential employers.

Sadly, tomorrow starts my work week which includes a 3-4 hour round trip each day. Joy. I seriously need to work on getting my website of work and resume up and ready so I can start sending out my resumes en mass.

In other news I finally made some great progress unpacking some of the last boxes. I only moved in mid September. Yeah, I am not one of the people that feels compelled to have everything out and settled before bed. I am perfectly content with having the necessities out and then slowly putting things in their place.

Well, I am going to go catch up on my few remaining shows left on my DVR then it is off to bed. 5am comes way too soon!

Deciding on a New Computer

I started with three different possibilities:
* 13" MacBook Pro
* 21.5" iMac
* Mac mini

I went to the Apple store at the local mall on Thursday after work. I was disappointed by all of the people in blue shirts just standing around chatting. I was not greeted upon entering the store and not once was I approached and offered assistance. Granted I know that if someone wants to purchase something in this store, they will go to the counter and just order what they want. It still would have been nice to have been acknowledged once in the store, especially if I am going to be shelling out between 1- 2 grand on a single item.

Anyways- the computer that I am looking for I want to be able to use as a daily computer for general internet surfing but I am mainly looking for a computer that I can carry out graphic design on.

First I played with the MacBook Pro. It was nice, but for the price I would have liked to have a larger screen, especially for doing design on. The track pad was decent but I would totally need to have a mouse to get a nicer "handle" when using Illustrator or Photoshop.

I moved over to the iMac and fell in love. The screen is gorgeous with the resolution. I used iMacs that had a magic mouse or track pad connected. Both have their pros and cons. I was very surprised as to how heavy the magic mouse was and not completely impressed by it. The track pad is great for browsing the internet or for applications where finger swipes can be used as commands. The mouse is still something that I would feel more comfortable using for design purposes.

The Mac Mini is a cute square hard drive. If you are using CDs/ DVDs you will need to get a drive since the Mac Mini does not have a disc drive. The mouse/ track pad and even keyboard are sold separately as well. You also have to purchase a monitor since the mini is just the hard drive and nothing more.

The price with all accessories needed for the Mini vs. the iMac is a difference of $700+. The iMac I was looking at has 1T of memory while the Mini is half that. My biggest issue is- what happens if I get the iMac (which is an all in one computer) and the screen goes out? Am I now left with a 1T hard drive and nothing more? At least with the Mini the monitor is separate from the hard drive so if the monitor goes out I can always replace that but I would still have my "computer".

Decisions, decisions...

I am heading to Best Buy to look at monitors tomorrow. If I can find a fabulous resolution screen that with the price of the Mac Mini is still well below the price of the iMac... I am sure you can figure out which way I will be leaning. I love the looks and qualities of the iMac, but I am still really worried about the monitor blowing.

I am planning on getting the protection plan which will hopefully cover the screen, but what happens after the 3 year policy expires. I highly doubt I will have the money to replace the computer in 3 years unless my life drastically improves.

Well, at least I will have plenty of fun tomorrow playing with the Macs and looking at the different screens.

Some Pictures...

Okay, so yesterday I promised some really nice pictures of my projects. Unfortunately that is not what I am posting.

The pictures are not amazing due to the fact that they were taken on my phone and the hats are currently in the process of being blocked on dinner plates.

I finally got around to sewing all the ends in to all three berets. The fair isle beret had sooooo many ends. Yes, I hate that part the most of knitting- sewing in ends is really dull.

This is my Skull Isle beret (the designer named it Scare Isle). The blue color is really purple. Underneath there is orange/black pattern of bats. I will be posting better pictures when the hat has finished being blocked. I made this beret out of Knit Picks Palette yarn. The yarn is a dream for knitting fair isle in but it will felt in a heart beat if you let it near any warm water. Strict gentle handling and cold water only for this beret.

This is the Through the Woods beret that I named Autumn Woods due to the lovely color of yarn that I found. The yarn is Malabrigo and it is super soft and squishy. I personally love the Malbrigo yarn brand so very much.
This beret I have titled my Type O Negative beret. The band Type O Negative (RIP Peter) use the colors of black and green (sometimes neon green) for their album covers. The yarn is black with neon green patches from Grinning Gargoyle. I really like how it came out with the green spiraling around that hat. Please pay no attention to the blue shown in the yarn overs of the hat- it is from the plate.

In other knitting news... I am almost done with one sleeve of my cousin's sweater and then only have the second sleeve to knit. From there it is just weaving in ends, blocking, and I should be able to drop it off on Sunday.

Well off to bed to catch up on my DVR.

Late Post

I'm getting my post in before midnight. Sorry it is not exciting or even interesting, bed is calling but I wanted to post first. I only got home an hour ago- very long day since I was up at 5am this morning. I promise some amazing pictures posted tomorrow of my recent knitting projects. There are so very many, I just haven't taken pictures or written about them yet. Nearly all are hats/ headwear (my favorite).

New New New

Well it is time for a change. Out with the old and in with the new. I need some new changes for the better.

My job is going... down hill and I may not have it for much longer. You could say it is due to a difference of opinion. I do not agree with some of the practices and mandates. In this economy, I would prefer not to lose my job but it seems almost inevitable. Needless to say, I am on the hunt for a new job and one that actually uses my hard earned and expensive higher education.

Second is getting a new computer. I am currently using one of my older computers because my newer one broke due to windows malfunctioning. Unfortunately I still have tons of files on there that need to be moved over before I could wipe the laptop and try to repair it. I am looking at getting a computer I have wanted for quite some time- a Mac. I have a design degree and need to use it!

Well, my weekend is looking busy with job hunting, creating a website that shows my work, and getting a new computer.

So... last night I joined the NaNoBloPo - National November Blog Post. It is a blogging take on NaNoWriMo. The user interface of the site I joined was great. I went through the process of joining and thought I was set. I was warned that they were changing web hosts to a new one today. When I accessed the site today... I was very disappointed.
1. All of the signing up I did last night was for naught. The new site could not locate my information anywhere
2. The new site is horribly user unfriendly. I had no problem linking up my blog and knowing that I could just copy and paste into the site each day. The new site- I have no idea where to do that.

While I have made a commitment to myself to blog everyday on this blog for the month of November, I am not sure how much I will be using the "host" site.
